Angel Sinclair, the woman behind the biggest shift in fashion shares her journey with AUK Radio.

Tell us a bit about your background

My parents come from Dominica but I was born in Hackney, East London, and the proud parent of four, with five grandchildren and one more on the way.

Models of Diversity? Who or what inspired you to start this campaign?

I took part in Gok’s Miss Naked Beauty in 2008 getting to the last 25. But there were so many beautiful women of all shapes, sizes, ages, and races. It really opened my eyes to a broader range of beauty and how poorly it is represented. I decided then the industry needed to look more like its clientele.

Since starting this campaign, what are the challenges you’ve experienced?

The day-to-day “nos” could be very disheartening to start with but we learned to get past them. Our first big event was “Curves in Couture” showcasing plus-size models and we learned so much from bringing it together. But recently we’ve been addressing the near absence of models with a disability; this is clearly going to be a big challenge. But we’re proud to have brought the first disabled models to New York Fashion Week. Let’s hope London catches up!

What impact are you hoping Models of Diversity will make in the fashion industry?

The industry has to change – it has to be more representative of the people it claims to be serving. It makes business sense, it’s fairer and healthier.

What are the big names you’ve worked with since you started the Model of Diversity Campaign?

New Look and Misguided have been great partners. And we’re gaining a wider media presence appearing on BBC, ITV and Sky TV and stations abroad, national and local radio and press. We’ve worked with great models too – Robyn Lawley, Toccara Jones, Velvet D’Amour, and some great ones whose names you’ll learn!

Tell us about your coming events and tour plans?
We’re touring with Choice Unlimited http://choiceunlimited.co.uk and bringing our petition to promote models with a disability to the major UK cities.
